How to Deposit a Check With Your Phone: Mobile Deposit Guide
Mobile check deposit is one of those small inventions that quietly changed daily life. No drive to the branch, no envelope at the ATM — just two photos and a tap. Here's how to do it right the first time.
Before You Start
- Make sure your bank's app is updated
- Verify your account is enrolled in mobile deposit (most are by default)
- Have good lighting — natural light works best
- Place the check on a dark, solid background
Step 1: Endorse the Check Properly
On the back, sign your name and write "For mobile deposit only at [Your Bank Name]". Many banks reject deposits without that exact phrase.
Step 2: Take the Photos
- Open the deposit feature in your bank's app
- Choose the account you want to deposit into
- Enter the check amount (must match the check exactly)
- Snap a photo of the front — fit the entire check inside the frame
- Flip the check over and snap the back
Step 3: Submit and Wait
After submission, you'll typically see funds within one business day. Larger checks may have a hold of 2–5 days. Keep the paper check for 30–60 days, then shred it.
Why Mobile Deposits Get Rejected
- Blurry photos or glare
- Missing or incorrect endorsement
- Amount entered doesn't match the check
- Check is more than 6 months old (stale-dated)
- Check is from a foreign bank or money order
